These days, many of us have found ourselves trying to do everyday things in an entirely new way. Staying safe at home due to the global pandemic has meant that we have moved our lives almost altogether online. Between online meetings, games played on phones and consoles, and reruns of our favorite movies, many of us are spending increasing time staring at screens of all sorts.

What is Blue Light?

Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum. It is produced by the sun and artificial light sources such as LEDs, computers, and smartphones. Certain types of blue light can be useful to help regulate our bodies’ internal clocks. However, blue-violet light can have a detrimental effect on our eyes, specifically the retina. It is also a risk factor for the onset of age-related macular degeneration, a deterioration of the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision.

How Does Blue Light Effect Our Eyes?

All of this screen time appears to come with a variety of harsh effects, such as headaches, eye strain, and insomnia. Whether this is the new normal or not, exposure to blue-violet light or harmful blue light, whether outside in the sun or through frequent sustained use of electronic devices and screens, is why safeguarding your vision has never been more critical.

How Can We Protect Ourselves?

Since some forms of blue light are essential, Crizal Prevencia No-Glare lenses specifically block only the detrimental types of blue light. A new technology called Light Scan™ allows helpful blue light to pass through the lens while filtering out the hazardous blue-violet light that can cause age-related macular degeneration. Picking up a pair of blue light blocking glasses from Carson Optical may eliminate these issues, reduce eye strain, and even help you sleep better.

Most people are at risk for overexposure to both blue light and UV light on a daily basis, therefore it’s important to have regular eye exams and speak with your eye doctor about lenses that can protect your eyes from detrimental blue light.
